We were saddened to learn that David “Joe” Mumford passed away peacefully at his home on 11 February 2020, aged 87 years. He was the beloved husband of Mary (dec), father and father-in-law of David & Cathy, and loved Poppa of Angie and Shane.

David William Mumford A41322 was born in Plymouth, Devon, on 21 January 1933 and subsequently joined the Royal Navy. He was loaned to the RAN in June 1951 for a period of two years, in which he was accompanied by his wife, Mary. He was an REM(Air) and, over this period, served at Albatross and aboard HMAS Sydney as part of the 20th CAG on both 805 and 808 Squadrons. He returned to the UK in December of 1953, but obviously hankered for Australia and subsequently applied for a transfer to the RAN in early 1958 with his wife.

During his six year term of engagement, “Joe” served at HMAS Albatross but with frequent periods aboard HMAS Melbourne. He appears to have reached the rank of A/PO before his discharge in February of 1964.

Joe’s funeral was held in Adelaide, where he lived, on 19th February 2020 and was attended by friends and family.
