We have been advised of the death of John William Currie in Nowra on 03rd October 2024, aged 96.

John enlisted in the RAN from Fremantle from which he joined No.1 Naval Airman Recruit Course at HMAS Cerberus at the beginning of January 1948.  He, along with the rest of his course, took passaged to the UK for Air Branch Training.

Returning to Australia the following year, John was posted to HMAS Albatross, which was to be his home base until his death over seventy years later.  He was one of the few FAA members to serve aboard all three aircraft carriers.

In April 1959 Petty Officer Currie was commissioned as A/SLT SDAV RAN and attended Air Traffic Control training in the UK from which he graduated in November 1960.  A string of postings at Albatross and aboard HMAS Melbourne (as Aircraft Control Room, Officer and Air Explosives Accounting Officer). He was promoted to LCDR in 1974 and concluded is career at the Senior Air Traffic Control Officer (SATCO) at Albatross.

He was a superb colleague to work with and an even better boss, and will be remembered as such.
